Uplands Entry Level Stewardship (UELS) Scheme

The UELS is a scheme which will aim to provide dedicated support to beef and sheep producers who farm the English Less Favoured Areas (LFAs), and which will replace the Hill Farm Allowance (HFA) scheme in England and Wales.

It recognises the difficulties that farmers face in these regions and the vital role that they play in maintaining the landscape and rural communities of the hills. UELS will be administered by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

H&H Bowe can provide a comprehensive service in relation to your eligibility and your ability to claim for UELS payment; we have over 200 existing HFA claimants, ranging from individual farmers and landowners through to large rural estates. We also provide advice on the Single Application and Less Favoured Area Support Schemes (LFASS) in Scotland. Our service includes:

  • Advice on stocking levels required for UELS or LFASS
  • Professional advice on all aspects of the Single Payment Scheme including cross-compliance regulations
  • Resolving land registration and mapping issues

Uplands Entry Level Scheme - Your Key Questions Answered by David Morley, Environment Advisor

The Uplands Entry Level Stewardship (UELS) scheme is being launched in early February to replace the Hill Farm Allowance (HFA).

Q: How is UELS different to the Hill Farm Allowance?
A:         HFA was an area-based support payment for livestock production in the uplands, which was claimed annually. UELS is an environmental scheme that requires farmers to undertake options in order to qualify for the payment.
